Cannabis Revs Up Your Sexual Drive, Study Says

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

In a special under-the-covers report, a new study from Spain has found cannabis improves desire, arousal, and orgasms.

According to research published in the journal Healthcare, researchers wrote, “Our findings indicate that young people who use cannabis frequently, regardless of gender, have better overall sexual function.”

This isn’t the first study to link an improved sex life with cannabis. Past research has shown that people who use cannabis have more sex. And those who use CBD lube and other products report improvement in sexual experiences. Experts also note how weed enhances intimacy

Cannabis vs. alcohol in the bedroom

To study the impact of cannabis on sex, researchers worked with 185 female and 89 male subjects from January through June 2020. Every person who participated in the study ranged from 18 to 30 years old.

Over six months, the researchers found that cannabis users scored higher than non-users in sexual functioning, arousal, and orgasm. Those who used cannabis the most scored even higher than moderate users. The study also reported that these findings were similar for men and women.

Alcohol, on the other hand, did not have a significant impact when it came to improving sexual function or experience, the study found. Why? The researchers delved into that issue, too.

Why does cannabis make sex better?

The study, led by researchers from the University of Almeria and the Almeria Health District, noted that past research has found cannabis use enhances sex for several reasons, including:

  • Heightened perceptions
  • Time distortion
  • Relaxation
  • Decreased inhibition

They also wrote that women in past studies have reported more cannabis use showed higher sexual function and desire, arousal, orgasm, and satisfaction. It also lessened inhibitions and reduced pain.

The researcher found that sexual function improved in young people who used cannabis and only moderately consumed alcohol in the new study. “This improvement is usually associated with a reduction in anxiety and shame, which facilitates sexual relationships,” they wrote.

The researchers also noted that marijuana and alcohol use could lower the self-discipline needed to avoid engaging in more unsafe sex. They called for more education for young people on the importance of practicing safe sex in all cases.
